Known by the epithet "The Edinburgh of the South", Dunedin lies on the South Island of New Zealand, overlooking the waters of the Pacific Ocean in the middle of an area of supreme natural beauty.
A popular entry point to New Zealand for travellers wanting to explore the many natural attractions of the southern part of the country, including Otago Peninsula and the wilderness areas inland, Dunedin is also a tourist attraction in its own right, and an architectural treasure of the southern hemisphere.
Following on from an earthquake that more or less destroyed the town in the last century, it was rebuild in grand style using Victorian and Edwardian expertise that has resulted in this town appearing to be one of the most ordered and exceptional places that you can visit, and has plenty to occupy you during your stay, including a variety of museums and excellent shopping.
Within driving distance of Dunedin, you can visit the only mainland colony of Royal Albatross in the world, and see yellow eye penguins on the Otago Peninsula.
Other attractions locally include some great beaches that offer the best surfing in the country and the chance to indulge your passion for hiking with long walks along the windswept cliff top paths that overlook the Pacific Ocean.
